Model Answer
Insomnia – a major sleep disorder whereby people are unable to fall asleep – has become a serious concern for many in recent times. It is a serious cause for worry because of the health and economic dangers it can cause. Nonetheless, it is not a problem that cannot be solved.
I had an experience with insomnia some years back, caused by the proximity of my former place of residence to an industrial site and to an airport. Both locations were situated a few kilometres to my house. It did not take long after they started operations that their activities began to take heavy tolls on me and my neighbours. Afternoon naps quickly became difficult to take and worse still, when we slept at night, we were frequently awoken by the noise from landing aircrafts. It became a serious issue when a few cases of mental illnesses, heart diseases, migraine, sudden deaths and depression started surfacing within our neighbourhood, due to lack of sleep. At some point, I was forced to take a leave from work, as I almost developed chronic migraine because I could not sleep well. I had to relocate from the area before matters got out of hand. Sincerely, lack of sleep can be detrimental to an individual’s survival.
It is also worth mentioning the impact on productivity, that insufficient sleep can cause. Research has shown that insomnia patients are scarcely effective at work as they suffer from burnout, stress and they often fall into bouts of sleep while at work. There are even cases of workers collapsing during tasks, thereby creating gaps in production.
There are a number of ways by which sleeplessness can be solved. To start with, employers need to provide adequate breaks for their workers to help them relax and avoid burnout. Moreover, governments of various countries need to create more industrial zones and restrict industries and airports locations to only these zones. In the same vein, landowners should be prevented from building residences in such areas. Another way to curb insomnia is for individuals to avoid late night usage of electronic devices, to engage in more physical exercises, to maintain healthy diets, and to observe breaks during work.
In sum, the increase in sleeplessness is worrisome due to the resultant threats it poses. However, it can be controlled if individuals, employers and governments play their roles effectively in curbing it.
