Several economies have invested huge sums into agriculture and food access. However, hunger remains prevalent in most of Africa, Asia and in other underdeveloped countries. This phenomenon is due to several factors, although governments could mitigate its effects through some lasting measures.
To begin, the population in some countries is continually rising faster than the rate of growth of food production. Many African and Asian homes have large families and many countries have high birth rates. As a result, not enough food is available for these homes to eat leading to malnutrition and associated diseases. Also, the occurrence of natural disasters like floods, earthquakes and drought with no preventative measures constantly leads to flooded farmlands and poor harvests of food crops. In effect, available food supplies are expensive and poor households can only buy little quantities of basic food items for consumption.
What is more? Most mechanized farming methods, irrigation schemes and advanced farming processes are common in developed countries and rich cities with low population. So, the rural communities are marginalized and left with traditional farming approaches that lead to low yields. The spread of pests and diseases with expensive and inadequate pesticides and herbicides is another problem.
African and Asian governments need to intensify their efforts in providing subsidies to farmers to afford seedlings, pesticides and other farm inputs, food vouchers to low income households and free feeding to school children from such homes. While the prevention of earthquakes may be nearly impossible, countries’ agricultural departments, ministries and agencies could invest in irrigation schemes to limit the impact of droughts to aid bumper harvests. They could even provide storage rooms and facilities to prevent the perishability of harvested foods.
The fight towards hunger remains and governments must continually invest in agriculture to achieve zero hunger, which is one of the United Nations sustainable development programs for 2030.
