MODEL OPINION ESSAY ON ONLINE BOOKS
In the future, nobody will buy printed newspapers or books, because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

It is believed that with the rise in free online blogs, free e-books and access to news on newspaper websites at no cost, a time will come when readers will stop visiting bookshops and vendors for hardcopy books and newspapers. While I agree that physical bookshops will lose patronage drastically in five or ten years from now given the current situation, I do not think they will stop operations completely.
No doubt, the growth in ICT and in the awareness of youths, students and adult literates about the benefits of the internet has contributed significantly to the massive number of views, online articles and news received daily. This situation is largely due to the low cost, convenience, lightweight nature and accessibility of these e-materials as compared to physical stores. I will rather browse through the pages of Punch website in minutes on my phone right from my living room than to carry around over a 100 pages of newspaper sheets, the bulk of which I may not spend a second to look through. So, just like me, it is expected that billions of persons worldwide will rather read online materials for free than go through that hassle.
However, due to the gap between developed and developing countries in terms of poverty and technological advancement, there will still be pockets of places where physical bookshops and vendors will remain relevant. Africa for instance, has and will continue to have lots of poor, less technically-savvy individuals who will prefer to stand by a vendor’s stand scanning through pages of newspapers for a token than to purchase an android device just to read materials via Google.
Besides, there are those who for health reasons will prefer to buy hardcover books than strain their eyes before a computer, tablet or phone. Or what about those who will continually pride in having a physical library in the corners of their homes? The market for physical bookshops and vendors cannot cease to exist in all sincerity.
As I close, it is expected that online reading resources will wipe out physical bookshops in the future, an opinion I do not totally agree with. Some people somewhere will always need to buy hardcover materials!
