Model Opinion Essay on Housing
In many places, new homes are needed, but the only space available for building them is in the countryside. Some people believe it is more important to protect the countryside and not build new homes there.
What is your opinion about this?
The housing industry is faced with a high demand due to rising population in the world. Unfortunately, most urban spaces are occupied with industrial and commercial buildings, so it seems the rural areas are the only locations to build more residential homes. However, there are calls against this step. In my view, there may be an environmental threat but the countryside still needs more homes for even development.
Constructing more residences like duplexes, bungalows or flats in villages and suburbs may endanger existing farmlands in these locations which may threaten the sources of livelihoods of farmers. Forests and game reserves may become extinct, thereby reducing tourism income generated from such areas. Moreover, useful but rare plants and animal species may become extinct, as they would be destroyed or in the case of animals forced to relocate. Worse still, the clean air enjoyed in most rural areas would be polluted and trees that provide sunshade and a cool temperature would be cut off.
However, if more homes are not built in rural areas, rural urban migration will continue and our cities and municipals will remain overpopulated and congested. Villages need to retain their residents, particularly their youths for manpower and one way to achieve this is to build more homes there. That way, more construction jobs are created and more economic activities are promoted. Building more homes there would trigger the attention of the government to these locations and more infrastructures would be provided like electricity, schools, hospitals and roads. This would even reduce the housing pressure on urban centres, especially in Africa where cities like Lagos currently experience a housing crisis.
In conclusion, protecting the countryside, albeit beneficial will limit its progress if more houses are not built there. What matters is to ensure that houses are situated in designated residential spaces in villages to sustain the clean environment already present there.
